English Ivy on Trees: English ivy may look attractive on tree trunks, but it can cause real damage when allowed to grow upward into the canopy.

As the ivy thickens, it adds weight to branches, increases the tree’s exposure to wind and storm damage, and can compete with the tree for light, water, and nutrients. Once ivy reaches the upper branches, it can also shade out the tree’s leaves and make it harder to spot disease, cracks, or other structural problems.

Residents are encouraged to check trees on their property and cut ivy at the base before it climbs higher. The safest method is to cut the ivy vines near ground level and again a few feet up the trunk, remove only the lower cut sections, and allow the upper vines to die and fall away naturally rather than pulling them from the bark. Regular monitoring and early removal will help protect the health and appearance of our community trees.

Our guide will be Ian Jean, Forestry and Land Stewardship Specialist of Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. This event is open to all our members, meet in the parking lot at the Warner Preserve site.
